Information

At the BMW Motorrad days held in Garmisch Partenkirschen. last year, BMW released a new 6.5-inch TFT full-color LCD instrument that can be equipped with its top adventure model R1200GS/ADV. This is the first time that BMW has tried to use a full virtual instrument in a production car, and it is also the first full-color TFT screen of BMW. Once it was released, it attracted a lot of attention on social media at home and abroad. Is it just a color screen? Where is it? Please listen to the wild and rapid speeding slowly below

It is not a new thing to use TFT full-color LCD screens as motorcycle instruments. As early as 2012, Ducati installed full-color screens for its super sports motorcycle 1199 Panigale, followed by 2015 models. Yamaha YZF-R1. This year is even more of a blowout year for full-color virtual instruments. The 2017 Honda Blaze is used, the 2017 Apulia RSV4 is used, KTM’s top adventure car 1290 Superadv s/r is used, and even the middleweight street car triumphs. Street triples have virtual instruments with full-color LCD display. With full-color LCD screens so popular, is GS's full-color release just following the trend? Of course not. If it only follows the trend, BMW cannot be called a leader in motorcycle technology innovation.

In the past, the TFT instrument only displays the driving data in the form of a virtual instrument, and helps to adjust various electronic system settings through the computer-like menu selection page, which is essentially an instrument; while BMW’s new instrument incorporates "smart" Among them, the smart phone connection function is added, and it can form a smart human-vehicle interaction system with BMW's official helmet Bluetooth headset system (Motarrad communication system).

BMW’s new instrument has only one main interface, and does not allow the theme to be changed like on some sports motorcycles (for example, the virtual instrument of Yamaha R1 has two kinds of street and track). Alligator believes that the speed and speed displayed by the electronic instrument are far It is clearer than the traditional instrument on the current R1200GS. The mechanical instrument with the numbers on the water bird is really hard to read. I even let the police uncle avoid a speeding ticket on the grounds that I can't see the speed clearly. What is displayed between the speed and gear position is the current road speed limit. This data comes from the onboard GPS, not the speed limit information obtained by the camera on some cars.

In addition to the main interface that displays the driving status of the vehicle, BMW has also designed five sub-menus including phone, video, settings, navigation and my vehicle. The purpose of simplifying the number of sub-menus and highlighting a single function application is to help the rider memorize the sequence of functions, which can be operated without looking at the screen, with as little distraction as possible.

By connecting a smart phone and using the BMW helmet external Bluetooth headset system, this new BMW instrument can display incoming calls, make and receive calls (the 2017 KTM 1290 Superadv can only receive calls, not outgoing calls), play music, and navigate.

The integrated map function of the instrument does not mean that BMW has abandoned the original independent navigation system. You can still use the new screen and the old navigation at the same time by switching the control mode. The new navigation exists more as an auxiliary navigation, and does not have a full map display. It only reminds how to turn and where to turn at the next turn (just like the head-up display on a BMW car). It is enough for short distances, but long distances are not enough.

On the vehicle status (my vehicle) page, the rider can view the temperature, tire pressure, driving mode and other data. It is worth noting that no matter which sub-menu page you are viewing, the speed and gear will continue to be displayed at the top of the screen, and you will never miss the most important information. Seeing this, some cyclists may question: I am riding a motorcycle. What is the use of these messy functions? Is it okay to be distracted by riding?

In fact, the manufacturer has long considered the possible problem of the virtual instrument affecting the Cavaliers’ attention. In vehicles/environments that need to focus on riding, the instrument will only display the most important vehicle information, such as the R1 instrument on the track mode, the speed only shows 8,000 to 15,000 rpm, the most conspicuous middle position has changed from speed to lap speed Conversely, in an environment where long-distance riding does not require so much attention, BMW can add a large number of long-distance functions. The virtual instrument allows a screen to meet multiple needs at the same time, which is excellent; finally, in this era when it is almost impossible for people to leave the smart phone life, it is unrealistic to completely prohibit driving to see the phone. It is better to use the vehicle instrument to display the important mobile phone. Information is worse than sparse.

The full-color TFT display instrument is temporarily only available as a modification of the original 18 R1200GS/ADV, which needs to be optional; the technology is getting more and more developed, which is really exciting!
